The Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) is currently developing a new Public Participation Plan as part of its commitment to effectively involve the public in its transportation planning and programming activities. SACOG is reaching out to community organizations, with specific outreach to environmental justice communities.
The PPP is a requirement to comply with the federal transportation act, SAFETEA-LU (Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient, Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users). But beyond meeting the federal requirement, the PPP reflects SACOG 's commitment to broad public outreach in working with residents and stakeholders of the region on a variety of transportation, land use and air quality programs and projects.
The PPP has three purposes:
The PPP is designed to assist SACOG staff in implementing an effective public involvement process through a variety of strategies. It provides a menu of activities to select from to tailor specific program needs. The PPP is being developed with input and assistance from various public agencies and community-based organizations.
The first Public Participation Technical Advisory Committee meeting was held on Wednesday, April 4. The meeting was well attended by members of various agencies and community-based organizations who stressed the importance of involving the public early in the decision making process and communicating how their feedback is considered in the development of SACOG 's policies, projects and programs.
SACOG will present a final draft PPP at the next Technical Advisory Committee meeting on April 30.
