What is the Metropolitan Transportation Plan 2035?

The Sacramento Area Council of Governments and its partners are developing the Metropolitan Transportation Plan for 2035 (MTP2035).

The goal:   define how $30 billion in transportation investments will support our growth over the next 23 years.

The challenge:   identifying improvements for how we move, whether by car, transit, bike or foot.

The process:   citizens will provide input at 16 community workshops throughout the six-county region. Maps and other planning tools will allow them to indicate preferences for transportation improvements. Several different plans will be developed based on community input. The public process will continue until the final MTP2035 is adopted in mid-2007.

Sacramento County:
Central Sacramento Workshop Findings

Citizen planners at the April 8 Sacramento County workshop helped answer important questions:

What distances are they traveling most?

Almost all participants chose a transportation scenario supporting shorter (up to 3 miles) or medium (3-10 miles) distance travel for trips to work, school, shopping, entertainment and medical appointments.

How do they prioritize their travel investments?

The most frequent investment suggestions included:

  • Neighborhood Shuttles countywide
  • Light Rail (such as extending to Sacramento International Airport)
  • Bus Rapid Transit countywide
  • Streetcars (downtown and near Arden)
  • Bicycle and pedestrian bridges (across American and Sacramento rivers)

How can we support our travel options?

  • Cleaner Air Programs ("Spare the Air" campaigns, replace dirty diesel engines)
  • Improve local bus service (bus replacements, ongoing operations serving new and existing developments, and paratransit service)
  • Improve pedestrian sidewalks and amenities (sidewalk connections, crosswalks and paths)
  • Expand bike lanes and trails
