What is the Metropolitan Transportation Plan 2035?

The Sacramento Area Council of Governments and its partners are developing the Metropolitan Transportation Plan for 2035 (MTP2035).

The goal: define how $30 billion in transportation investments will support our growth over the next 23 years.

The challenge: identifying improvements for how we move, whether by car, transit, bike or foot.

The process: citizens will provide input at 16 community workshops throughout the six-county region. Maps and other planning tools will allow them to indicate preferences for transportation improvements. Several different plans will be developed based on community input. The public process will continue until the final MTP2035 is adopted in mid-2007.

Yolo County: West Sacramento Workshop Findings

Citizen planners at the March 23 community workshop in West Sacramento helped answer important questions:

What distances are they traveling most?

A majority of workshop participants focused on a transportation scenario supporting shorter distance travel (up to 3 miles) for trips to work, school, shopping, entertainment and medical appointments.

How do they prioritize their travel investments?

The most frequent investment suggestions included:

  • Neighborhood Shuttles (both in Southport and in the mature neighborhoods of West Sacramento)
  • Streetcars (along Capitol Avenue, Jefferson Boulevard and the Sacramento River waterfront)
  • Bike/pedestrian crossings (over Jefferson, Broadway and Highway 50)
  • Intersection Improvements (along Jefferson)
  • Transit centers (in Southport, especially along Jefferson)
  • Road bridges (Sutterville, Pocket and Broadway)

How can we support our travel options?

  • Improve local bus service (bus replacements, ongoing operations serving new and continued developments)
  • Expand paratransit services for elderly and disabled (curb-to-curb transportation, expanded services for fast-growing elderly population)
  • Improve road maintenance (repair potholes, pave surfaces)
  • Improve road safety (improved shoulders, guardrails, lighting, pedestrian improvements)
  • Support cleaner air programs (replacement of dirty diesel truck and bus engines, "Spare the Air" campaigns)
